A brief description of the route
The Salaca is the most beautiful river in Northern Vidzeme and a very important place for salmon from the Baltic Sea to spawn.  Boaters are particularly delighted by gorgeous sandstone cliffs around Mazsalaca and Mērnieki.  The river has a few small rapids that are caused by rocks.  The river can be travelled in rubber boats and rafts, but canoes are recommended.
The Salaca is in the territory of the Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, and tents are permitted only in specific locations.  Early April will offer a thrill for those who like more extreme water sports.
You can also bicycle from Mazsalaca to Salacgrīva, because from Staicele to Salacgrīva, the road runs alongside the river.  The segment from Mazsalaca to Skaņamkalns is appropriate for hiking.
Note:  Those who own camping facilities are allowed to collect a fee of up to LVL 1 per person for the use of the facilities.

Points of interest
The Neļķu cliffs: There is a viewing platform at the top of the cliff from which one of the most beautiful views of the Salaca river valley can be seen.  It’s worth taking a stroll over to the nearby "Devil’s pulpit" and "Devil’s cave".
Skaņais hill: This sandstone hill is around 20 metres high and is known for its peculiar echo effect - try it!
Staicele: A small town on the shores of the Salaca, best known for a major fishing competition.
Vīksnu caves: Two caves that are 24 metres deep, on the right bank of the Salaca downriver from Staicele.
Sarkanās cliffs: The most beautiful sandstone cliffs along the Salaca, known as the “red cliffs” because of their colour.  The cliffs are particularly magnificent during sunset.
At Mazsalaca: The Valtenberģi baronial estate, the "Little Devils" museum, a museum of wood sculpture, the Skaņākalna park.
At Salacgrīva: The Salaca castle hill, the Lielsalaca Lutheran Church, the Catholic Church, the Zvejnieku park, the Salacgrīva museum, lamprey weirs on the river.
