A model for sustainable tourism in Central Asia: Building capacities, creating awareness, introducing technology

Project goals

The project aims:

  • to promote a new and well-structured model for sustainable tourism in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan that can contribute to preserving and strengthening local culture, heritage and traditions, while also protecting the natural environment;
  • to support tourism companies mainly in Uzbekistan, but also in Tajikistan and Kazakhstan to adopt (SCP) practices by providing appropriate knowledge and ICT tools;
  • to support regional and local authorities to plan and implement policies that assist the development of sustainable tourism;
  • to raise awareness regarding sustainable tourism and consumer awareness about sustainable consumption;
  • to strengthen the dialogue between authorities, SMEs and end users as concerns SCP.

The action is addressed to 440 enterprises in tourism sector in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, 30 local and regional authorities, 15 consumer associations, and 3 Tourism Associations (target groups) while the final beneficiaries are local communities, tourism MSMes and professionals, end users of tourism services and products, Chambers of Commerce, BIOs.

Project results

  • 380 tourism MSMEs trained on the use of tools and SCP methodologies and standards;
  • 440 tourism MSMEs in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan equipped with the appropriate ICT tools and knowledge for adoption of SCP practices;
  • at least 50 tourism MSMEs trained on marketing tools;
  • Latvia pass its experience in sustainable management for accommodations in Central Asia;
  • strengthened dialogue between state actors and business sector for sustainable tourism;
  • recommendations formulated for the adoption of sustainable tourism in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan;
  • local and regional authorities supported in policy planning and linking it to investment and other support instruments;
  • awareness about the sustainable usage of water and energy raised;
  • access of MSMEs to finance promoted;
  • role of local and regional authorities in sustainable tourism strengthened;
  • SCP practices adopted in the tourism sector.
